Every other position in a building asks what happens if someone walks into the glass. Overhead glazing asks what happens to the people underneath when it fails. That single question drives the whole specification: laminated glass, so the broken panel stays in the frame held by its interlayer, instead of emptying itself onto the room below.
It also drives the framing. Overhead panels carry their own weight plus wind and, in some parts of the state, hail impact, across a span with no support in the middle. Sections, spans and fixings are sized for that, and a glass roof is a small structure rather than a large window.
What gets built
- Skillion roofs — a single fall, the simplest and most common over a deck or alfresco area.
- Gable roofs — a ridge with a fall each side, suited to wider spans and pergola structures.
- Curved roofs and awnings — over entries, walkways and windows, usually powder-coated to match the existing roof or trim.
- Skylights — into a stairwell, a hallway or a bathroom with no external wall, which is the highest-value use of overhead glass in a Melbourne house.
- Canopies and sunroom roofs — where the structure becomes part of the living space.
Powder coating the framing to the existing roof or window colour is standard and is worth specifying rather than accepting mill finish.
Melbourne conditions that matter
Solar gain is the big one. A glass roof over a north or west facing outdoor room collects heat all afternoon, so performance glass or tinting belongs in the original specification. Second is debris — gums and plane trees drop constantly onto overhead glazing, and leaf litter that sits in a low-fall gutter or valley is how water finds its way in. Third is hail. Melbourne gets damaging hail, and while laminated glass performs far better than the alternatives, no glass roof is hail-proof; it is an insurance item like any other glazing.
Repairs
Cracked panels, failed seals, leaking flashings and blown or fogged units are all replaceable without rebuilding the structure, provided the framing system is sound and the profiles can still be matched. Access is the main cost driver on overhead repair work — the same panel at ground level is a fraction of the price.

Why does overhead glass have to be laminated?
Because of what happens when it breaks. Toughened glass overhead disintegrates into thousands of granules that fall as a shower, which at roof height is a serious injury risk. Laminated glass cracks but the interlayer holds the fragments in the frame. AS 1288 treats overhead glazing as its own case for exactly this reason.
Will a glass roof make the room unbearable in summer?
Untreated, over a north or west facing space, yes. Glass overhead collects direct solar load all day. The fixes are specification rather than shade after the fact: performance or tinted laminated glass, a low-emissivity coating, or reduced glazed area with solid sections. Decide that before the structure is built, not after the first February.
Do glass roofs leak?
They leak when the fall, the flashings or the drainage are wrong, not because they are glass. Overhead glazing needs a designed fall so water runs off rather than pooling, correctly detailed flashings where it meets the building, and somewhere for condensation forming on the underside to drain. Most call-backs on glass roofs are water detailing, not glazing.
Can a cracked skylight panel be replaced on its own?
Usually yes, if the framing system is intact and the panel size and build-up can be matched. The access is the harder part, because it is roof work and it needs the right equipment and fall protection. Older proprietary systems occasionally have discontinued profiles, in which case the section gets replaced rather than the single panel.
