The honest starting point
There is no fixed price for replacing glass, and any website that publishes one is either quoting an unrelated country or quoting a job so narrowly defined that it will not be yours. Glass is sold by area at a rate set by type and thickness, and the labour around it varies by more than the glass does.
What follows is every lever that moves the number, so that when you get a quote you can see what it is made of.
The variables, ranked by how much they move the price

The things people are surprised by
Safety glass is not optional, so it is not a saving. In doors, bathrooms, low-level glazing, balustrades, pool fences and overhead positions, AS 1288 requires grade A safety glass. If your old window had plain annealed glass and the new one has to be toughened, the price difference is the law changing under you, not an upsell.
Reglazing beats replacing. If the frame is sound, putting new glass into it is almost always the cheaper path. Whole-unit window replacement earns its cost when the frame has failed, the hardware is unobtainable, or you are moving to double glazing.
Small jobs carry the call-out. A tiny pane still costs a vehicle, a trip and a tradesperson's time. For small cut-to-size items like mirrors, shelving or table tops, supplying accurate measurements can avoid a site visit entirely.
Board-up plus glazing is two visits. Any emergency job where the glass has to be made to size will be two attendances. That is not a markup, it is how made-to-order glass works.
What a good quote looks like
It names the glass — "6mm toughened obscure" or "6.38mm laminated" — rather than saying "glass". It states whether removal, disposal and making good are included. It says how many visits are involved. And for anything beyond a stock size, it comes after a measure, because toughened glass cannot be trimmed once it is made.

Frequently asked questions
Why will nobody quote glass over the phone?
Because the price is area multiplied by a rate that depends on glass type and thickness, plus labour that depends on access and frame condition. Change clear float to obscure toughened and the glass rate multiplies. Move the same window to the second storey and the labour doubles. A phone estimate without those facts is a number someone will have to revise.
What are the dollar figures I see on other glazing sites?
Frequently overseas averages. If a page quotes a national average in dollars per square foot, talks about labor with no u, or prices a 30 by 36 inch sliding double-paned window, it is United States retail data. It has no relationship to what a Melbourne glazier pays for glass or charges for labour, and it should not be used to sanity-check an Australian quote.
Is an emergency call-out much dearer than a booked job?
Yes. After-hours work carries a call-out fee reflecting the hour, and overnight, weekend and public holiday rates are higher again. It also frequently means paying for two visits - the board-up and then the glazing. If the broken glass is internal and the property is secure, waiting for business hours genuinely saves money.
How do I compare two quotes properly?
Make sure both specify the same glass. A quote that says 6.38mm laminated and one that just says glass are not comparable, and in a safety glass position the cheaper one may not be compliant. Then check what is included: removal and disposal, making good the frame, beading or silicone, and whether a second visit is priced in.
