If you read the safety glass rules and wonder why they are so specific, doors are the answer. A person walking into a full-height sheet of glass they did not see is the accident AS 1288 exists to prevent, and doors and the fixed side panels beside them are where that happens. That is why door glazing must be grade A safety glass, and it is why an old door with plain annealed glass has to be upgraded when that glass breaks.
Laminated is common in doors because it stays in the frame when it fails, which also makes it harder to break through in a burglary. Toughened is used where the door is frameless or the glass is structural.
The door types that come up
Hinged and French doors. Single or double leaf, swinging in or out. Straightforward, well sealed, and they need swing space, which is the only real constraint.
Sliding doors. The default on post-war and project housing. Panels slide past each other on a bottom track. Simple, reliable, and always leaving at least one panel's width closed.
Stacker doors. Sliding doors with multiple panels that stack behind one another, opening a wider span than a two-panel slider.
Bi-fold doors. Panels hinged to each other that concertina to one or both sides, opening the full width. Best where the whole opening matters — living room onto deck, or a kitchen servery to an alfresco bench.
Internal glazed doors and leadlights. Period homes across the inner suburbs are full of them. Original leadlight panels can often be repaired rather than replaced, which is a specialist job worth asking about before anyone quotes a plain replacement.
Repairs and hardware
Most door calls are not about broken glass. They are rollers, tracks, hinges, pivots, floor springs on commercial entry doors, closers, locks and perished seals. All of those are replaceable and all are far cheaper than a new door. The exceptions are frames that have racked or rotted at the base, where replacing the unit becomes the honest recommendation.
Oven and heater doors are a smaller but regular job: cracked heat-resistant glass in a kitchen oven or a lounge room heater can usually be replaced for a fraction of the price of the appliance.

Frequently asked questions
What glass is required in a glass door?
Grade A safety glass - toughened or laminated - in the door itself and usually in the fixed side panels beside it. Doors are a high-risk position under AS 1288 because people walk into them, and the fatalities that produced the standard largely happened at doors and side panels. Plain annealed glass is not an option in a new door installation.
Can the glass in my existing door be replaced?
Usually yes, and it is far cheaper than a new door. A timber door with beaded panels is straightforward. An aluminium sliding door panel is also normally replaceable in the existing frame, though large sliding panels are heavy and often need two people and the door taken off its track. Frameless glass doors with patch fittings are the exception, where the panel is the door.
Bi-fold or stacker for opening up a living room?
Bi-folds open almost the full width and fold clear, which suits a servery or a wide opening onto a deck. Stackers slide panels behind one another, leaving one panel's width permanently closed, but they are simpler mechanically, seal better and cost less. Bi-fold hardware carries the weight of every panel, so it needs a level threshold and periodic adjustment.
Why has my sliding door become hard to open?
Almost always worn rollers or a damaged bottom track, not the glass. Rollers flatten and seize with grit over the years and the track lips get bent by being walked on. Both are replaceable, and it is a fraction of the cost of a new door. Grinding and dragging is the early warning; fix it before the track is damaged beyond repair.
